What is Ingress Protection (IP)
The IP Code, or Ingress Protection Code is defined in IEC standard 60529 which classifies and rates the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water. The standard aims to provide users more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as waterproof.
What do the two digits in an IP Rating mean?
An IP (Ingress Protection) Rating consists of two digits that indicate the level of protection provided by an enclosure against solid objects and water.
First Digit (0–6): Indicates the level of protection against solid objects and dust. A higher number represents greater protection, with IP6X being completely dust-tight.
Second Digit (0–9): Indicates the level of protection against water ingress, ranging from dripping water to high-pressure water jets and immersion.
For example, an IP65 rating means the product is completely protected against dust (6) and protected against water jets (5).
